Spoiler Summary/Synopsis:

Asimo recalls taking the junior high school mock entrance exam. Back then, Asimo was just an average student. Since “external” students were allowed to take the mock exam, one of Asimo’s friend’s point out Nasa to him, describing Nasa as obviously dumb. Asimo learns Nasa’s family name. As a result, when he learns that Nasa took the top score, Asimo decided to try harder.

One snowy day, Asimo happens to encounter Nasa. Asimo can’t believe it when Nasa says he’s not taking the real entrance exams. Nasa decided to attend his local public school as it was free and close. Thus Asimo’s hopes of attending the same school as Nasa ended. A few years later, Asimo heard that Nasa died in an accident.

In the present, Asimo and Himari make their way up to the top of Tokyo Tower. Himari feels a little scared, so she takes Asimo’s hand to comfort herself. While looking out the observation deck, Himari asks if Asimo can really finish the college entrance exams in first place. He’s about to ask her for a favor if he succeeds when he sees Nasa with Tsukasa.

Thoughts/Review:

Well, Tonikaku Cawaii Chapter 238 kinda went the way I expected. We did get the meeting between Nasa and Asimo as the plot has them coming to the top of the tower at the same time with their date. What I didn’t expect was more background information, depicting how Asimo first came to know Nasa. The initial encounter was brief, as was the second encounter. I don’t think they met after that, but it is hard to remember at times.

That aside, while I didn’t hate this chapter, it is clear that the plot is driving these events forward. Obviously, when Hata-sensei created the series, Asimo did not exist. And Himari was just pasted onto a throw-away line from a little girl in Nasa’s past, as depicted in the first chapter of the manga. So now Hata-sensei needed to further invent a past for Asimo and Nasa to share. That way when Asimo makes a scene, Himari can join in on the fun. And then Tsukasa is left wondering, “Is there anyone my husband didn’t have an impact on?” 😂

I do like the Asimo x Himari romance stuff. I have no problem with Himari helping to drive it forward, since Asimo seems more the timid type. And thanks to Himari’s prodding, Asimo was about to say something to her. But now, is he going to be jealous when he learns Himari also knew Nasa? I guess I’ll have to wait and find out.

Final Thoughts and Conclusion

In the end, Tonikaku Cawaii Chapter 238 invents more of a past for Nasa and Asimo, so that the reunion has more impact. Plot drives everything, so everything feels staged. But I can’t say I disliked the chapter. I liked it for what it was. But I’m still not looking forward to some love-cube-thing.
